I love having candles in the house so when I was asked if I would like to try some Potters Crouch Candles recently I couldn't resist. Usually I'm given candles as gifts so to have the chance to choose my own was a real treat. I had not heard of Potters Crouch Candles previously either so was keen to give them a go.
Potters Crouch Candles "offer an exciting and diverse range of unique and highly scented candles for your enjoyment. We are also able to create bespoke candles for special occasions such as weddings and parties to bring that extra personal touch to your day, as well as memorial candles to remember that special someone." Each candle is "handmade, hand–labelled and hand–finished in our 300 year old converted barn nestled in the heart of the English countryside in Hertfordshire where resident barn cat Nanu and the office puppy Henry keep a watchful eye over proceedings". The about us section of the Potters Crouch Candles website.
The website is simple, yet eye catching and very easy to use, making choosing candles easy. You can shop by several catagories, Friut and Flower, Fragrances of the World, fragrances of yesteryear, christmass candles or all candles. Well I say easy... the only problem I had was deciding which candles I wanted to choose! The variety of different scents available is fantastic. Each candle is named and a description provided of the scent. The descriptions alone transports you to tropical islands, country gardens and foreign climates and you can almost smell the candle through the computer. All this makes it harder deciding which candle to choose. After about an hour and consulting Dad of three I finally opted for Secret Garden and Frankincence and Myrhh.
Dad of three was keen to try Frankincense and Myrhh as had always wanted to smell these fragrances but hadn't had the opportunity to do so before hand. Secret Gardens appealled to me because I love the smell of gardens in full bloom with the smell of morning dew mixed in, the promise of spring and summer to come. Candles cost £8.50 and with 70 different candles to choose from there is something for everyone.
It took about two days for the candles to arrive. They were carefully packed in a box with two small fairtrade chocolates (a lovely touch) and a little leaflet with instructions how to get the most out of your candles. It is suggested that the first time you use your candle you burn it for about four hours until the pool of wax is close to the edges of the container. This helps you get more use out of your candle. Candles can burn for around 50 hours.
We lit the Frankicense and Myrhh that afternoon and soon the whole house was filled with smell of insense with a hint of lemon and christmas tree thrown in. It wasn't an overpowering smell at all but quite uplifting. It was a cold day that day but the fragrance of the candle had a warming element to it and made the whole house seem cosy and welcoming. Previously dad of three in particular gets overwhelmed by the candle I am burning and after a while asks for them to be extingished but this wasn't the case with this candle. We happily left it burning for almost four hours before putting it out and long after it was out the smell continued to warm the house.
A couple of afternoon's later when I wasn't working I decided to lit the Secret Garden candle. Again the fragrance wrapped its way around the whole house and evoked childhood memories of running around my parents garden early in the morning in spring or summer, when the sun had just warmed the flower petals enough and the morning dew had almost dissappeared. A truely delightful scent to have in your home.
These candles have certainly been carefully chosen and blended to create some delightful combinations of scent. This is a skill that is not easy to come by and one that in this case has been put to good use. One thing is for certain once you have tried a Potters Crouch Candle you will not want to use any other candle. Potters Crouch Candles would make delightful gifts for Mother's Day, a birthday gift or for any occassion.
